SMU's vision is to be a "premier University, internationally recognised for its world-class research and distinguished teaching". The Lee Kong Chian School of Business (LKCSB) is strategically led by its fundamental objectives of recruiting highly motivated and dedicated research academics and attracting students of high calibre. In this endeavour, the School focuses on fostering a vibrant and high-quality research environment while maintaining excellent teaching standards.
The School contributes towards the University's mission of disseminating knowledge, generating leading edge research with global impact, and producing broad-based, creative and entrepreneurial leaders for the knowledge-based economy.
The School comprises seven primary areas: Corporate Communication, Finance, Strategy and Organisation, Marketing, Operations Management, Organisational Behaviour and Human Resources, and Quantitative Finance. Other areas of research include: Entrepreneurship, International Business, Strategic Management and Technology, and Innovation Management. The faculty exceeds one hundred with PhDs from fifty-two internationally-renowned research universities who come from seventeen different countries. The School is highly ranked for its research achievements, for example, it is ranked third in Asia in 2016 by UT Dallas Top 100 Worldwide Business School Rankings based on Research Contributions.
Conferences and Seminars
As an international research institution, the School hosts scholars from Asia, Europe, the U.S. and elsewhere. It organised conferences, seminars, summer camps and workshops every year, which serve as platforms for research collaboration and the exchange of knowledge. This affirms the School as an international research centre.
The School funds research through internal grants. Research support is also available through external grants such as MOE Tier 2 and the NOL grants. In addition, funding is available through named professorships and fellowships which include Lee Kong Chian Professorship, Celia Moh Professorial Chair, Ho Bee Professorship in Chinese Economy and Business, The OUB Professorial Chair, Keppel Professorship in Financial Economics, Lee Kong Chian Fellowship, Della Suantio Fellowship/D.S Lee Foundation Fellowship, Lee Kuan Yew Fellowship for Research Excellence, and the BNP Paribas Fellowship.
Centres and Institutes
Faculty members of LKCSB have spearheaded or played key roles in the various Centres and Institutions within the University such as the Centre for Marketing Excellence (CME), LVMH-SMU Luxury Brand Initiative under CME, Institute of Service Excellence, Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, UOB-SMU Asia Enterprise Institute, and Sim Kee Boon Institute.
The School offers the PhD in Business programmes by research. Faculty-guided research is a key component in these programmes which aim at preparing students for careers in academia and industry. Graduated students have been successfully placed in institutions such as National University of Singapore, Singapore Institute of Technology, Fudan University, Central University of Finance and Economics, Beijing, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, and also as research specialists and practitioners in various government agencies and business organisations.
