Application Procedure

We encourage candidates to complete their applications in earlier deadlines, as seats in the SMU MBA and scholarships may be limited by Deadline 3.

We typically receive an influx of applications near deadlines. To reduce the stress of meeting our application deadlines, which includes collating relevant documents and waiting for your referee reports, we encourage you to start your application as soon as you can.

  • Minimum post-degree work experience of 2 years.
  • Good undergraduate degree from a reputable institution (in any field).
  • Strong interpersonal skills and international outlook, and the ability to work in diverse groups.
  • Any outstanding professional accomplishments, leadership experience and potential, academic aptitude, and community impact would be an added advantage.
  • The SMU MBA programme seeks candidates who demonstrate intellectual prowess and leadership capabilities, are committed to learn, and who have the personal qualities to contribute to the SMU MBA experience and greater community:

With a particular emphasis on professional accomplishments and demonstrated leadership potential, the SMU MBA programme seeks to groom candidates to lead organisations after they graduate from the programme. Our programme has a strict minimum work experience requirement of 2 years, and our participants have an average of 5 to 6 years of working experience. While younger candidates can apply, they must demonstrate outstanding leadership potential and maturity through their professional and personal experiences.

Given the rigour of the SMU MBA curriculum, our candidates will need to demonstrate strong academic credentials, as evidenced by their past academic performance. The GMAT is our basis for comparison of applicants from diverse national, educational and professional backgrounds. While the SMU MBA programme has no minimum GMAT score, candidates who register higher than average scores in the verbal, quantitative and writing sections will be considered to be more competitive. TOEFL or IELTS scores will be required for candidates whose undergraduate or graduate degrees were not taught in English.

We look forward to nurturing business leaders who have a keen sense of social responsibility and who will proactively contribute to the learning experience both inside and outside the classroom. Candidates with strong interpersonal skills and an international outlook are likely to thrive as leaders in our globalised world.

  • A good GMAT (try a GMAT mini quiz) / GRE / *SMU Admissions Test (SMUAT) score (click here to view the SMUAT Factsheet)

      2. Describe your outstanding talents, skills and inherent abilities that are not reflected in your academic qualifications and records.
      3. Describe the situation with the greatest ethical complexity that you have faced in your professional or academic life, and how your input helped resolve it.

Yes, as we will be aiming to build a diverse class for each programme we ask that you choose which programme is best suited for your needs. Requests to transfer from one programme to the other will be evaluated but not guaranteed.

You can send us your application prior to taking the GMAT. However, admissions decisions will not be made until the GMAT score is received.

An admissions test (GMAT/GRE/SMU Admissions Test) is required for all candidates (regardless of age) for both the Part-time and Full-time programmes. This gives us a base to compare candidates from different backgrounds to ensure each of our students can manage the academic rigour of the programme. Although there is no minimum score we consider GMAT scores above 600 to be competitive.

More information can be found at www.mba.com.

You can get more details regarding the GMAT test centre at https://www.gmac.com/.

SMU's GMAT institution codes are:
Full-Time MBA: F8D-7V-17
Part-Time MBA: F8D-7V-35

We do not set a limit to the number of times you sit for the GMAT. You are the best judge as whether you can significantly improve from your last score. We ask that you report all past scores and we will consider the highest score achieved for your application evaluation.
