SMU participated in Economist Impact’s 3rd Sustainability Week Asia conference in Bangkok held from 11 to 13 March. It attracted leaders from the business sector, government, scientific and environmental experts, as well as representatives from international organisations and NGOs worldwide, with over 1000 participants. The University contributed experts who spoke on several plenary sessions. SMU's academics and experts shared their profound perspectives and exchanged knowledge with other active sustainability-minded individuals from various sectors to explore the most practical way for sustainability to be truly achieved. During the "Fostering a Carbon Market in Asia" panel, Nikki Kemp, Centre Director of SMU’s Singapore Green Finance, highlighted that reducing carbon emissions is required now, and outlined how price certainty and transparency were key to building a market. During the 'Financing the Transition' forum, SMU Associate Professor of Finance and Co-Director of Singapore Green Finance Centre Hao Liang highlighted the importance of financial tools for fundraising in achieving sustainability transition. Participating in the "Climate Risk: Protecting Ecosystems and Biodiversity" panel, SMU Professor of Urban Climate and Pillar Lead (Urban Infrastructure) Winston Chow emphasised the importance of protecting ecosystems and biodiversity in mitigating the effects of climate change. SMU also showcased its sustainability programmes and research at an exhibition booth at the event.
