Introduction
Michelle Tay, Executive Director of the Singapore Kindness Movement, embodies the principles of kindness, civic-mindedness, and social consciousness. A distinguished alumna of the Lee Kong Chian School of Business at Singapore Management University (SMU), Michelle’s journey reflects how education, coupled with mentorship, can shape personal growth and professional success.
Her path to SMU wasn’t straightforward. As an undergraduate, Michelle had hoped to enroll in the university but was not admitted at the time. However, years later, a combination of professional mentoring and unexpected opportunities allowed her to realize this goal—bringing her aspirations full circle.
A Full Circle Moment at SMU
“I wanted to go to SMU as an undergraduate,” Michelle recalls. “But things didn’t work out that way.” At work, she met Dr. William Wan, a prominent figure who became her mentor. Recognizing her potential, he encouraged her to further her education.
“It was Dr. Wan who made me think seriously about going back to school,” Michelle explains. “He encouraged me to pursue something that would align with my personal and professional growth.”
Inspired by his advice, Michelle enrolled in SMU's Master of Science in Communication Management (MCM). It was the ideal choice, as it built upon her marketing background by enhancing her communication skills and providing essential leadership tools for her role.
The Power of Networking at SMU
One of the things that stood out to Michelle during her postgraduate studies was the vibrant networking culture at SMU.
“At SMU, it’s not just about academics; it’s about the people you meet along the way,” Michelle shares. “They become part of your lifelong network and are valuable not just in your career but in your personal life as well.”
Throughout her time in the programme, Michelle had the opportunity to engage with a diverse group of professionals, exchanging ideas and forging meaningful connections.
Leading with Kindness
Now the Executive Director of the Singapore Kindness Movement, Michelle continues to champion for values that align closely with both her personal philosophy and her professional work. Her passion for creating a kinder, more compassionate society is reflected in both her professional work and personal philosophy.
“Being kind is easy,” Michelle emphasizes. “It’s about small actions that add up to bigger changes. Whether it’s at work, school, or within society, everyone can do their part.”
Through her leadership, Michelle encourages everyone to recognize their capacity to create change by starting with small, intentional acts of kindness.
Conclusion
Michelle’s journey from aspiring to join SMU as an undergraduate, to ultimately completing her postgraduate degree there, is a testament to the importance of mentorship and a sense of purpose. Her experiences at SMU LKCSB not only helped her grow as a leader but also amplifies the values she carries in her role today. Through her leadership at the Singapore Kindness Movement, Michelle continues to inspire others to embrace kindness and create lasting change.
