The SMU Postgraduate-Office of Career Services (PG-OCS) provides a variety of services to assist postgraduates in exploring career options and making effective career decisions.
TALK TO US
Internal Career Counsellors
We are located at the Dato Kho Hui Meng Career Centre on Level 7, SMU Administration Building. Each master's program (by coursework) is assigned a career counsellor. Your designated career counsellor will be able to provide assistance in various aspects of your career development process, including tips on resume writing, cover letter critique, interviewing skills, job search strategies, negotiation of remuneration packages, career visioning and management. Career counsellors can also assist in navigating SMU’s array of career preparation resources, including the management of online resources and materials housed at the Dato Kho Hui Meng Career Centre.
Prior appointment with your career counsellor is required.
External Career Coaches
We also offer a panel of external career coaches who provide one-on-one career counselling sessions either face-to-face or via Skype. Such sessions could include, although the list is not exhaustive, resume and cover letter critique, interviewing skills, job search strategies, negotiation of remuneration packages, career visioning and management, etc.
Personality Profiling
The personality profiling inventory offered to postgraduate students include CareerLeader and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment. Each tool is unique, and like a mirror, offers insights into different facets of a job seeker’s innate abilities, skills sets, interests, motivating factors, organizational fit, worker traits, values and aspirations. In addition, students also have the opportunity to learn more about their personality type vis-à-vis a host of other types of tools, for effective management of self and others in group and organizational settings. Assess yourself and discover your strengths, weaknesses, interests and preferences through the various tools administered by certified coaches.
Further Development
Career Development Workshops
PG-OCS offers a slew of career development workshops to help postgraduate students acquire life skills. Workshop topics could range from career planning, resume writing, interviewing, employment negotiations, wardrobe management and networking, to name a few. These workshops are held throughout the year and are specifically targeted to meet the needs of students undergoing career transition and career progression.

There are also various reading materials, including trade and professional journals, employer directories and much more. The centre is open Monday – Friday (8:30am – 6:00pm) and is located on Level 7, SMU Administration building.
GET OUT THERE
Major organisations typically conduct university recruiting activities during August-October each year, targeting students that are completing their studies and able to start work by July/August the following year. Additionally, other recruiting opportunities in Singapore typically seek candidates available in Singapore for face-to-face meetings and immediate start dates (within one month).
Networking Sessions
OCS organizes two networking sessions a year, allowing you to meet with potential recruiters in an informal setting. You will be notified of these events via email.
Recruitment Talks/Industry Talks/Company Visits
PG-OCS organises recruitment talks and company visits on a regular basis. These talks serve as a platform for organisations to share information about their firm and opportunities that are open to postgraduate students. Company visits also allow students to be exposed to the working environment, and for hiring managers to meet students on a one-to-one basis.
