SMU Senior Lecturer of Organisational Behaviour & Human Resources Paul Lim explained that candidate ghosting is a reflection of power dynamics in the job market, where companies prioritising efficiency may not respond to unsuccessful candidates in an employer's market. Conversely, in a candidate's market, job seekers may ghost employers. Dr Lim advised both parties to be respectful toward each other's time and effort, as declining an offer gracefully can help a candidate's future career, while keeping applicants informed can boost a company's reputation for attracting talent. He also advised job seekers to actively continue their search rather than waiting for a response, noting that receiving other interview offers can also increase their value.
