Commenting on Grab’s new app feature letting users book these rides directly with fares varying by distance, timing and demand, SMU Assistant Professor of Strategy & Entrepreneurship (Education) Terence Fan said the changes allow a lot more possibilities in terms of non-stop trips and more door-to-door opportunities, so people do not need to then go back to those few fixed places to make a connection. However, he pointed out that this service would be quite expensive as the taxis are pricing extra for the convenience. Asst Prof Fan also pointed out that allowing Grab to be an intermediator means that taxis from any of the taxi operators in Singapore can list themselves on the app and make themselves available for such rides, therefore taking part in this relaxed business environment. He mentioned that this increases the flexibility and freedom for taxi operators. Asst Prof Fan added that the system will bring some illegal private hire vehicles into a more legitimate environment. Overall, he believes that the changes open up a lot more options, increase convenience, and can help stimulate a lot more cross-border activities.
