Given the growing industry demand for professionals with a strong understanding of sustainable finance, the Lee Kong Chian School of Business has launched a new Sustainable Finance track for undergraduates.
The track will be offered under the current Finance major in the Bachelor of Business Management (BBM) programme.
This first of its kind in Singapore, and among the first in Asia, the track’s curriculum will cover essential topics such as sustainable financial instruments, carbon markets, sustainability risk management, and sectoral decarbonization.
The track will equip students with the critical skills needed to lead in the fast-growing field of sustainable finance. Students completing the track will gain a comprehensive understanding of sustainable finance principles and practices. As such, they will be well-prepared for emerging career opportunities in areas such as impact investing, ESG reporting, and sustainable risk management.
In addition, the track will also offer strong industry exposure through client projects, case studies, and guest lectures by industry leaders and sustainability experts.
According to a recent report the Monetary Authority of Singapore and the Institute of Banking and Finance, an estimated 4,000–5,000 sustainable finance-related jobs will be created in Singapore over the next decade. Demand for talent is surging as some S$4–5 trillion in sustainable financing will be required across Southeast Asia over the next 10 years.
This track is aligned with SMU’s strategic pillar of “Sustainable Living”. It addresses a critical knowledge and skills gap, and will prepare students through an interdisciplinary education rooted in real-world needs.
