Faculty members in the Finance group at the Lee Kong Chian School of Business received their doctorates from leading research universities such as Georgia, Harvard, INSEAD, Iowa, Ohio State, LBS, Princeton, Rochester, Stanford, Washington (St Louis), Tilburg, and Texas (Austin).

The faculty have published actively in prestigious finance journals. For example, from 2004 to 2017, they published 53 articles in Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Financial Studies, and Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis. This ranks SMU 42nd worldwide, 2nd in Asia, and 1st in Singapore according to the ASU finance rankings. The finance group hosts an annual summer research camp, an active research seminar series, and visits by distinguished finance scholars from leading research universities. The finance group also has a PhD program with high quality students and good recent placements.

In teaching, the finance group offers both undergraduate and graduate courses, such as Analysis of Equity Investments, Analysis of Fixed Income Securities, Analysis of Derivative Securities, Corporate Finance, Entrepreneurial Finance, Financial Innovation, International Finance, Investment Banking, Mergers and Acquisitions, Portfolio Management, Real Estate Investment and Finance, and Wealth Management. Undergraduates who major in finance also have the opportunity to choose a track to specialise in. Tracks in the finance major include Banking, International Trading, Wealth Management, Finance Analytics (new track, from 2017), and Real Estate (new track, from 2018).

Our programs have received industry certification and are highly ranked. In particular, our BBM (Finance), MSc in Applied Finance (MAF), and MSc in Wealth Management (MWM) degrees have achieved CFA Program Partner status and we are one of the qualified Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) Association Academic partners. In terms of rankings, our MWM has been recognised as one of the top three finance Masters programmes in the world by the Financial Times (FT) Masters in Finance Post-experience Ranking 2017, and the MAF program is ranked 4th among Asian business schools and 45th in the world in the FT Masters in Finance Pre-experience Ranking 2018. And in 2018, SMU is ranked 30th in Financial Times for MBAs for Finance.
